This San Diego backyard came to us as a blank slate that needed to be redesigned from the ground up — the homeowner wanted a clean, modern outdoor space with clearly defined zones, low-maintenance surfaces, and a layout that made full use of every square foot. The result needed to feel finished and intentional from every angle, including from the elevated back porch.
We poured large-format grey concrete across both sides of the yard to create a wide, open patio surface that anchors the space and provides a clean, contemporary foundation. Premium Coronado Turf was installed as the central feature, with a row of flush 2x2 stepping stones running through the middle to create a defined pathway across the lawn without breaking the visual flow. Decomposed granite fills the left side zone for a low-water, textured contrast to the concrete, while a white raised planter box was constructed along the back fence to house a mature citrus tree and elevate the garden element above the hardscape level. Solar-capped post lights on the stair railing complete the space with a modern, finished detail.
